Safety Tips for Seniors

The summer heat and sun have finally arrived. Temperatures are rising and the envy to go outside beckons. Staying safe as a senior is extremely important, and can even affect your health.

Follow these five simple steps to ensure your safety is a number one priority.

First – always be sure to stay hydrated. Seniors are more susceptible to dehydration because the aging process lessens the ability to conserve water. Also, seniors are less aware of thirst. Be sure to always keep water handy and sip it consistently throughout the day!

Second – Be sure to consult with your doctor. Make sure the doc gives you the okay to test the vivacious temperatures physically, but also be sure to ask about your medications. Some medications don’t work properly if stored at higher temperatures. This is an easy way to be proactive!

Third – Keep yourself cool. If you aren't able to stay cool in your home, consider venturing to the nearby mall, Movie Theater, or grocery store. Doing this will always give you the change to get some exercise. This to-do is a one-two punch!

Fourth – Stay connected with your family, friends and neighbors. Be sure someone will be able to check in with you. This is important and could potentially save your life, especially if you were stranded in the heat somewhere.

Fifth – Always protect yourself from the sun and bugs! Wear your sunscreen and be sure to use bug repellant if you will be out at night or in the woods. As you age you are more susceptible to sunburns, and of course you don’t want to risk getting West Nile Virus from a pesky mosquito.

Be sure to always use your best judgement. If you ever feel faint, dizzy, nauseous etc. be sure to contact your doctor or visit your local emergency room immediately.
